Systematic Chaos was written and recorded from September 2006 to January 2007 at Avatar Studios in New York City, co-produced by drummer Mike Portnoy and guitarist John Petrucci and engineered by Paul Northfield. The final mix was signed off on Valentine's Day, February 14, 2007.[1] The final master of the CD was finished and the track listing was released[2] on February 21, 2007. It is scheduled for release in June, 2007.
Fifty Dream Theater fans from the New York area were given the opportunity to perform on the new album in January 2007 through Portnoy's Internet forum, and have provided chants for at least one of the songs.

The album will also contain another, and possibly the last song in Mike Portnoy's series of songs about his experience with alcoholism (so far "The Glass Prison" on Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, "This Dying Soul" on Train of Thought and "The Root of All Evil" on Octavarium).
Contrary to some earlier reports, there are eight tracks (as "In the Presence of Enemies" is in two parts).
